He joined the U.S. Navy on 8 May 1946 and was honorably discharged on 6 May 1949.  He served aboard the U.S.S. Franklin D. Roosevelt at the rank of TD3 during that time.

Joe began his education studying electronics through various branches of the military.  He served 35 years in civil service, retiring in 1984.  After leaving the 8 to 5 job, he enjoyed traveling with his wife and working in the construction business with his close friend, Michael Sanders.
